As we enter into a new decade, one recent trend continues to make its mark on society -- and your dental patients. That trend is vaping.
Vaping, or the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), is going to be in the news plenty as the new year begins. It is being reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will soon ban the "fruity flavors" in cartridge-based e-cigarettes, leaving tobacco and menthol as the only options for those who wish to vape. President Donald Trump has even weighed in on the health risks that are associated with vaping.
But what does all of this mean for dental practices? How should they talk to their patients about the effects of vaping? Or should they even be talking about it all? These are just some of the questions I asked dental pharmacology expert Tom Viola, RPh, on the latest episode of the Dental Assistant Nation podcast series, powered by IgniteDA.net. Viola has kept his eye on the growing trend and its effects on those who choose to vape.
In this episode, Viola talks with me about some simple ways that dental professionals can address the issue of vaping with their patients. That may include some tweaks to the health history form, as well as some deeper questions and answers with the patient before and after the procedure.
Check out the podcast below to hear our discussion and some frank talk about the important role every dental professional plays in the patient's oral and overall health when it comes to vaping.
And remember, the Dental Assistant Nation series, powered by IgniteDA, has podcasts designed to help dental assistants become more empowered, enlightened, and educated. It also has topics of interest to every member of the dental team to help grow their careers.
