Dentist settles lawsuit over Scientology, harassment

A Chicago dentist agreed this week to pay $462,500 to settle allegations that he violated discrimination laws by subjecting 18 female employees to sexual harassment, including sexual propositions, comments, and touching, and requiring them to follow the teachings of the Church of Scientology, according to a press release by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The commission filed a civil lawsuit against James L. Orrington, D.M.D., in September 2007. The complaint also alleged that Dr. Orrington had taken retaliatory actions against employees who complained, according to the commission.

Dr. Orrington's attorney, John O'Connor, told the Chicago Tribune that his client continues to deny all the allegations but agreed to the settlement to avoid further expense and disruption to his business.
