Fake dentists charged with causing real infections

Police have arrested a Delaware couple of practicing dentistry without a license -- and causing infections in the process, according to news reports.

Carlos Ruben Ramos-Martin, 35, and Delma Lopez-Ramirez, 41, of Georgetown, DE, face charges of practicing medicine without a license, possession of hypodermic needles, possession of a noncontrolled prescription drug, and conspiracy, the Delmarva media group reported.

Authorities investigated after neighbors in the Crestwood Gardens apartment complex reported that the pair was practicing dentistry there, and healthcare providers said they'd seen patients with serious infections following extractions done by the two, according to Delmarva.

Police said they had been investigating for more than a year but patients were unwilling to come forward because of fears about their immigration status.

Ramos-Martin and Lopez-Ramirez are themselves being held on an immigration detainer, the news organization said.
