The most heavily lobbied bill in the current Nebraska state legislative session has to do with education requirements for dental assistants, according to an article in the Lincoln Journal Star.
The bill (L.B. 542), sponsored by Lincoln Sen. Kathy Campbell, would allow the state Board of Dentistry and Department of Health and Human Services to regulate the education and training of dental assistants, the newspaper reported. Department rules already specify what the assistant's duties can be, but the attorney general's office believes the agency cannot create education requirements unless state law is broadened, Campbell told the paper.
Dental hygienists and dental assistants oppose the bill (for different reasons), while dentists are divided on the issue, according to the article.
The bill received first-round approval from the state Senate on May 11, the paper reported.
