Reno fluoridation bill advances

The Nevada Senate Finance Committee last week passed a bill requiring the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) to fluoridate water in and around Reno, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

While the TMWA would have to start fluoridation right away, Washoe County voters would get an opportunity to halt the program with an initiative on the November 2010 ballot, the AP reported.

The bill pits antifluoride activists against dentists and other healthcare professionals. To start fluoridation, TMWA estimates it would cost about $5 million; to continue would run about $1.5 million a year, AP said.
