Photonics buys dental journal

Photonics Graphics, a graphic and Web design company, has purchased the Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice from Procter & Gamble (P&G) and begun charging for access, according to a report in Business Courier of Cincinnati.

Photonics set up a new subsidiary, Seer Business, to run the peer-reviewed online journal, the Courier reported. Photonics was already designing and illustrating the publication, according to the story.

P&G published the journal free "as a service to the professional community," said Photonics co-owner Alan Brown. Now the company will try to make the publication pay for itself by asking readers to pay for subscriptions.

Some 170,000 people logged onto the journal from 170 countries in 2008, clicking on it 24 million times, the Courier reported, with the number of hits increasing by more than 1 million per year.

The journal differs from most other scholarly publications in the dental profession because it makes extensive use of multimedia.
