The former department head of the University of Manitoba's dental school has lost his license to practice after being found guilty of mistreating special needs patients over a 25-year period, according to a story in the Montreal Gazette.
The Manitoba Dental Association found Ronald Boyar, D.M.D., guilty of 105 instances of professional misconduct between 1991 and 2006 when he was medical director of oral health for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and medical leader of a teaching clinic at the city's Health Sciences Centre, the paper reported. In addition, he billed for dental work he never performed.
The clinic serves mostly special-needs patients, including physical and mentally disabled individuals and heart and cancer patients.
The health authority began its investigation of Dr. Boyar in November 2005 and he was terminated in May 2006, according to the Gazette.
