Report: Calif. prison dental clinics still subpar

More than three years after court-ordered improvements in California prison dental clinics, most remain dangerously crowded and unsanitary, according to a story in the Sacramento Bee. A November 2009 report found that clinics at only eight of 33 prisons in the state are "adequate," the Bee reported.

Before the court order, half of dental jobs were vacant in many prisons, said Alison Hardy, an attorney with the Prison Law Office, a nonprofit behind lawsuits that forced changes in care, according to the Bee. Now nearly all prisons are 95% staffed, she noted.

The state prison system plans to renovate or rebuild clinics between 2012 and 2017, the Bee reported.
