Trapped Chilean miners develop toothaches

Drilling to release the 33 miners trapped 2,300 ft underground in Chile resumed this week after it was revealed that some were suffering from dental problems, according to the Chilean Interior Ministry's National Emergency Office (ONEMI) and various news reports.

"Those miners who had digestion problems are now in good condition. However, some of them have started to feel dental discomfort, on which the relevant treatment will be carried out," ONEMI said in a statement. The miners will be offered the relevant treatment as quickly as possible, according to the agency.

Drilling on the wider shaft being bored to rescue the miners began August 30 but was stopped September 1 due to instability in the wall of the new shaft, ONEMI said. But the problems were "solved in a short time" and drilling resumed later that day, ONEMI said.

So far the shaft is 98 ft deep, and authorities estimate that the drilling work could take until December to reach the trapped men.
