Mo. dentist's horse finishes 3rd in Ky. Derby

After failing five years ago to win the Kentucky Derby in his first try as an owner, Ray Nikodem, DDS, saw his 3-year-old colt Mucho Macho Man place third in May 7's Run for the Roses, according to a story on stltoday.com.

Dr. Nikodem, who has a practice in the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield, is part owner of Mucho Macho Man, which crossed the finish line in third behind second-place Nehro and winner Animal Kingdom, according to a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The third-place purse in the Kentucky Derby is $200,000, the story noted.

Prior to becoming part owner of Mucho Macho Man, Dr. Nikodem was part of a group that owned Flashy Bull, which finished 14th in the 2006 Kentucky Derby. He and a friend purchased Mucho Macho Man 18 months ago for $80,000 from a breeding farm in Florida.

He currently owns 30% of the thoroughbred.
