A retired oral surgeon whose insurance company paid nearly $700,000 earlier this year to settle a lawsuit filed in the death of an Ohio teen is facing new allegations from another patient.
In a lawsuit filed December 27, Carrie Taylor of Lorain, OH claims that Henry Mazorow, DDS, injured her when she went to him for dental treatment in December 2010, according to a story in the Chronicle-Telegram.
The lawsuit, which seeks damages in excess of $25,000, claims that Taylor "was caused to suffer seizures, neurological damage, and other severe and debilitating injuries, some of which were permanent in nature."
Dr. Mazorow called the allegations "groundless" and told the Chronicle-Telegram that he was told Taylor suffered an allergic reaction.
In October, Mazorow's insurance company settled a lawsuit filed by the parents of Marissa Kingery, a 13-year-old who died in January after undergoing intravenous sedation for dental surgery. Kingery went to Dr. Mazorow in December 2010 to have two teeth removed and was given a combination of propofol, ketamine, remifentanil, and Versed. After she became ill and collapsed, she was rushed to the hospital and placed on a ventilator. However, she failed to respond to treatment and was officially pronounced dead on January 3, 2011.
The official cause of death -- which was ruled accidental -- was diffuse hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy due to respiratory arrest, the coroner's report stated.
Following Marissa's death, Dr. Mazorow stopped giving intravenous sedation. He subsequently agreed to retire September 1 after consulting with the Ohio Dental Board.
