Woman sells Twinkies on eBay to pay dental bill

A Maryland woman has taken a creative approach to pay off some outstanding dental bills: selling Twinkies on the Internet.

The Frederick News-Post reported that 29-year-old Maranda Berkley seized the opportunity to stockpile and sell the cream-filled sponge cakes when news of Hostess Brands' demise received widespread attention. Now she's using the money from online sales and auctions to help pay a $2,000 debt owed to her dentist for treatment.

When Hostess announced that an impasse between its bakers union and management would close the company, Berkley called around until she found an outlet that still had Twinkies in stock. She purchased more than 30 boxes of them for $1 a piece, the article stated.

After selling them on Craigslist, on eBay, and in the classified section of the Frederick News-Post for $11 or more, she has made about $160. Buyers in Japan, the U.K., Russia, and Austria have surfaced. Berkley admitted that she has kept one box for herself, the article noted.
