Texas marines examined with unsterilized instruments

Nearly 100 Marines in south Texas will be tested for bloodborne diseases after dental technicians performed exams with unsterilized instruments.

The exams were performed on January 11 at the depot in Harlingen, TX, and marine commanders found out about the incident several days later, according to a story on KRGV.com.

The incident involved members of the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, KRGV.com reported.

The marines will be on medical surveillance for a year to monitor them for the development of disease; however, military officials said it's highly unlikely that they were exposed to bloodborne pathogens, according to the article. The incident is under investigation.
